Composting: The Next Step

When we realized we needed to center in on one change, we wondered "what is the smallest step that can lead to a big impact?"

While educating others about the negative impacts of the current agricultural industry is important, we found that even with the knowledge, people did not know how they could help.

Deciding what product to create was not simple. We had to think of what is something that requires little change or effort.

Just about everywhere that you may go you will see a trash can, and more than likely there will also be a recycling bin. But what about a composting bin? Not all waste can be categorized into recycling or trash. So, we thought why not use the items that can be used again?

The Three Compartment Bin

THE NEXT STEP

Test One.jpg

Step One

The First Step:

We assumed the best option was a cylinder style bin and to divide it into sections, we used cardboard from a box.

Step Two

The Second Step:

Next, we placed the cardboard in the box to test how the best way to divide the bin would be.

The Third Step:

We figured out that the best way would to place on peace of board in the center of the bin.

Step Four

The Fourth Step:

We decided that because most users will probably continue to throw most of their waste into the "trash" section, to make that area bigger than the "Recycle" and "Compost section of the bin.

Step Five

The Fifth Step:

After concluding that we wanted the "Compost" region to only take up a quarter of the bin, it was time to label each compartment.

Step Six

The Sixth Step:

The final prototype is a labeled three compartment bin that allows users to sort their waste into recyclables, trash, and compost.

The Final Product

Our Final Product:

After testing our prototype, we concluded that the best design was not a cylinder style bin, but a rectangular prism style bin with three equal-sized compartments with clearer labels.

A product that requires little to no effort, but has the ability to make a big change!
